Sleep Apnea facts and how our treatments work

What is Nightlase® Sleep Apnea Laser treatment?

Developed in 2010 by Fotona Medical Laser in Europe, Nightlase ® sleep apnea treatment is a highly effective, safe, and non–invasive laser treatment. Nightlase has a clinically proven record and requires no surgery or anesthesia. Nightlase produces a positive change in sleeping patterns by opening up the air passage, effectively targeting the main cause of sleep apnea.

How does Nightlase work?

Sleep apnea occurs when the tissues of the walls in the upper airway including the tongue relax and either completely or partially restricts the airway of the nose and mouth. Just like most tissue in the body, the soft tissue in the back of the throat weakens with age and other lifestyle factors such as smoking. Nightlase® sleep apnea laser treatment enhances the production of collagen (neocollagenesis) which results in new, firmer tissue in the throat, uvula, and soft palette. This makes the throat less likely to collapse by becoming larger and firmer, helping to prevent one of the causes of sleep apnea.

Are there any risks involved?

Nightlase® uses only the latest laser technology and with no surgery performed, the treatment is extremely safe. There is no damage, permanent scarring, or removal of tissues. With Nightlase there are no anesthetic injections or any other injections meaning our patients can walk in and walk out on the same day without any recovery period.

Does the treatment hurt?

Nightlase is a non-invasive treatment with most patients reporting no pain during the procedure.  There can be a mild sensation of discomfort which is very tolerable.

Are there side effects?

There are no serious side effects. Some patients feel a mild soreness or tightening of the throat which fades very quickly.

What happens before, during and after treatment?

Before Treatment:

Dr Campey will provide a 30-minute free assessment where he will recommend some lifestyle changes depending on your health and lifestyle which may reduce the symptoms of your sleep apnea. This is to help increase the quality of your sleep between your initial consultation and your first laser treatment session and reduce the number of sessions you will need.

Dr Campey will thoroughly examine the upper section of your throat, tonsils, uvula, and soft palate looking for any signs of inflammation, swelling, or abnormalities that reduce or obstruct the size of your airways. After a complete examination and understanding of your lifestyle habits, Dr Campey will tailor a specific sleep apnea procedure plan to suit your needs and provide the best outcome for your sleep apnea.

During Treatment:

The treatment will take approximately 30 minutes. You do not need to prepare anything before the session but if you have been keeping a sleep diary or sleeping log then please bring this with you. It is not essential but useful for Dr Campey’s follow-up appointments. To start you will lie on a comfortable table while Dr Campey uses a hand-held laser device to gently heat the soft palate and throat. You will feel only a mild heating sensation.

After treatment:

Nightlase® is surgery and chemical-free meaning there are no side effects, and no need to wear a mouthguard or mask at night. After the session, you can simply continue on with your day, including driving to work. There is no recovery time you simply walk in and out the same day.

How many sessions will I need?

Patients require three or sometimes four sessions on average to stop their sleep apnea completely depending on the severity of their condition. However, a yearly follow-up is recommended should tissue at the back of the throat begin to break down again due to the normal aging process. Several of our patients have achieved the results they were hoping for (no more sleep apnea!) after only one session, but this is not typical.

How much does it cost?

The initial consultation with Dr Campey cost $90, with a Medicare rebate available.

The price for one session of Nightlase® Laser sleep apnea and snoring therapy is $700. Follow up treatments are $600. Pensioners and health care cardholders will receive an additional discount.

Medicare rebates are also available.

We also offer our patients zipPay where you sign up for an account at home before treatment or at the clinic after your treatment. ZipPay allows you to apply for up to $1000 credit with no interest on payments, making sleep apnea laser treatments more affordable for everyone. We are not able to accept any other payment plans, including zipMoney.
